The ADI Qualifying Process
Your Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a Driving Instructor
Qualifying as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is a structured process designed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to ensure every instructor has the knowledge, driving ability and coaching skills needed to teach safely and professionally.
With the right guidance and support, each stage becomes a logical step towards building a rewarding new career.
Phil Hirst will help you understand the process, prepare for every assessment and support you throughout your journey from your first enquiry to becoming a fully qualified driving instructor.
Before You Begin
Before applying to become a driving instructor, you'll need to meet a few basic DVSA requirements.
To qualify, you must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Have held a full UK driving licence for at least three years
- Meet the DVSA's suitability requirements
- Complete a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check
Don't worry if you're unsure where to start. Phil will explain everything during your initial conversation and guide you through the application process before your training begins.
The Three-Part ADI Qualification
Part 1
Theory Test
Build your knowledge of driving theory, instructional techniques and road safety before completing the DVSA theory and hazard perception tests.
Part 2
Advanced Driving Test
Demonstrate the high standard of driving expected from a professional instructor through practical assessment and advanced driving techniques.
Part 3
Instructional Ability Test
Show your ability to coach learner drivers safely and effectively through structured lessons based on modern teaching methods and standards.
Part 1: Theory Test
Your journey begins with the ADI Part 1 theory test.
This assessment measures your understanding of road safety, instructional knowledge and the theory required to become a professional driving instructor. It includes both multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test.
Phil's structured training and online learning resources help you prepare systematically, allowing you to study confidently while fitting your learning around work and family commitments.
Includes:
- Multiple choice examination
- Hazard perception test
- Structured revision programme
- Online study resources
Current DVSA Test Fee: £81
Part 2: Advanced Driving Test
Once you've successfully completed Part 1, you'll begin preparing for your advanced practical driving assessment.
This test requires a significantly higher standard of driving than the learner driving test. You'll demonstrate safe, confident and professional driving while showing excellent observation, planning and vehicle control.
Training is delivered through one-to-one coaching with detailed feedback after every session.
Focus Areas:
- Observation and planning
- Advanced vehicle control
- Professional driving standards
- Safe decision making
Current DVSA Test Fee: £111
Part 3: Instructional Ability
The final stage focuses on what matters most, your ability to teach.
Rather than simply assessing your driving, the DVSA wants to see how effectively you communicate, coach and adapt your lessons to individual learners.
Phil uses practical training sessions, mock scenarios and constructive feedback to help you build confidence before your assessment.
Many trainees find this the most enjoyable part of the qualification because it's where everything comes together.
Focus Areas:
- Lesson planning
- Coaching conversations
- Risk management
- Reflective learning
- Professional standards
Current DVSA Test Fee: £111
Gaining Real-World Experience
After successfully passing Part 2 and completing the required training, you may be eligible to apply for a trainee licence.
This allows you to begin teaching learner drivers while continuing to prepare for Part 3, giving you valuable real-world experience before becoming fully qualified.
The trainee licence:
- Is valid for six months
- Requires at least 40 hours of instructor training
- Allows you to teach learners under supervision
- Helps build confidence before qualifying
Current Trainee Licence Fee: £140
